I’m looking for information on my great grandfather Eugene Johan Baptiste Von Wihl born in Buhl in Alsace in 1883.

Hi Sarah,

The good news is you have a town (or more a village) name.

Which means you can easily find (if they exist) the records you are looking for.

There are a few villages with the name of Buhl in Alsace, so you may have to check a few of them until you find the right village.

And you will have to read through records written in German most likely.

And very likely handwritten records (although in the late 1800s we do start to see some standard printed forms sometimes).

Really hope your research is going well.
Your chances of finding what you are looking for are pretty good (it's never 100% unfortunately).

I've had a few projects where I had all the right info but the records just weren't there. Usually, it's the village or town name that wasn't right. I always look in numerous years just in case and I'm always on the lookout for alternative spellings. It's just the nature of genealogy research in France.

Nothing is ever spelled correctly it seems. And it's so easy to misread handwritten numbers.
