Asparagus Season in Alsace

by Jenn
(Bartenheim, Alsace)

For those of you who LOVE asparagus (asperges in French and Spargel in German), this is the season for fresh asparagus!

It starts around April and goes to about mid June.

You'll see almost every restaurant offering specials for asparagus. Often they come with different sauces and charcuterie or hams.

Alsace is one of the few regions that grow asparagus in France.

You'll find green asparagus sometimes but mostly white asparagus (which Alsace is particularly famous for).

YES White Asparagus!
by: Suzele

Hi Jenn,

Oh, I am always looking forward to white asparagus season here in Alsace France!

It's one of the best things about spring here.

The season sometimes starts early or late, but it rarely lasts more than 2 months. It's the only sad thing about it.

I could eat my weight in our local Alsatian white asparagus.

Asparagus grows in different areas in France (and other parts of Europe), but they can taste different.

For one, in France, the sauces for our asparagus are to die for.

And the asparagus from western France tastes different. I am a bit biased. Alsace asparagus for me, please.

I'll also say that asparagus quality varies too.

Grocery store asparagus isn't always as good as from local farms (you don't always know where the supermarket asparagus came from). I always buy it directly from farms.

Most restaurants also buy good quality asparagus.

Enjoy the season!
Suzele
