Is There a Town in Alsace That Sounds at All Like the Name Below?

by Sarah
(UK)

My family comes from Alsace but the oral tradition has confused the name of the village a bit. They eventually wrote down Shyford.

Is there anything that sounds like Shyford or at all close?

THANK YOU :))

Off the Top of My Head
by: Suzele

Hi Sarah,

Off the top of my head, nothing comes to mind. I would recommend going through a map of Alsace with a magnifying glass : )

Or just zoom in a lot and look for names that sound or look similar.

I would guess it has "evolved" a lot over the centuries.

Of course some small villages have disappeared over time, so that is a possibility too.

But that is how genealogy research usually goes, lots of looking and not finding anything for hours and hours ; )

Sorry I couldn't help more,
Suzele

Shyford

The closest I ever came to Shyford was Scherwiller but I would love to hear someone pronounce that in Alsatian.

Scherwiller
by: Suzele

Hi Sarah,

I really doubt it's Scherwiller.

There are a lot of Sch names in Alsace and other Germanic dialects.

It's probably something that sounds like Shyford when pronounced quickly.

Like Schyfa (pronunciation only) but I don't know of anything similiar to that.
