My GG grandfather Michael Brehel, born Alsace Lorraine ~ 1817, emigrated to US 1838

I am looking for info on my GG grandfather Michael Brehel who, apparently, was born in Alsace Lorraine ~ 1817, emigrated with arrival in 1838 Baltimore MD. He may have been traveling with a sister or wife named Hannah.

Hi Metta,

Based on the birth date and emigration date for your ancestor, he was likely born in Alsace or Lorraine.

But not Alsace Lorraine.

Alsace Lorraine didn't exist in 1817 or 1838.

Not yet.

Not as an official entity that someone would put on their passport or official documents.

Now the question is...which one?

Because to continue your research, you'll have an easier time if you are only searching thousands of villages and cities instead of hundreds of thousands of them.
