Searching for Alsace Last Names in My Family History

by James Nova
(Scottsdale, AZ, USA)

Hi everyone,

Part of my family comes from Alsace. As far as I can tell the emigree was Solomon May born in 1832 and emigrating to the U.S. in the mid 1800's.

Any record of a family by the name of May?

How's Your Genealogy in Alsace Going?
by: Suzele

Hi James,

I hope your Alsace family research is going well and you're making progress.

Just to be sure, you're asking about the last name MAY in Alsace.

And also the last name SOLOMON?

Just want to be sure that anyone who reads this understands what you are looking for.

Do you happen to have any more info to go with these names?

Any village or town names?

The name MAY or MEY exists in Alsace. It tends to be Jewish.

MEYER is a pretty common name in Alsace (for Jewish and non Jewish Alsatians).

But SOLOMON for me my spidey senses also suspect that it could be Jewish. Even though there are plenty of Christian Alsatians with biblical names. And most of what I have seen was SALOMON not SOLOMON.

Hopefully you've found everything (and everyone) you're looking for.

Do you have any questions about your Alsace family?

The kinds of info that you don't find in official records (as valuable as they are).

I study and love the history of Alsace and its cultural traditions, beliefs and every day practices.

So I'd love to hear more about what you're looking for as I add info to this website.

Take care,
Suzele
