If we fly into Basel, Switzerland, can we get to Colmar by train?

Are the fun towns to stop along the way?

Thanks,
Lisa

Basel to Colmar
by: fiona

My hubby and I are flying into Basel and have an apartment booked in Colmar to spend a couple of days at the Christmas market. We are undecided whether to rent a car or take the train. We are leaning towards renting a car as it sounds like there may be lots of things to see on the drive. Does any of your books cover this drive? What are your thoughts and also is the drive relatively easy.
Your website is awesome and we wish we were going for a longer length of time to avail of one of your tours. Perhaps another time. Thanks

Taking the Train from Basel to Colmar

Hi Lisa,

There are lots of interesting things to do between Basel and Colmar if you're driving...

But unfortunately the train line that runs from Basel to Colmar doesn't have so much.

When you arrive at the EuroAirport which is also called the Basel-Mulhouse Airport, you'll have two options...

You can go to the French side of the airport, go outside and catch a French shuttle to the nearest French train station (which is in Saint Louis) where you can buy tickets to anywhere in Alsace.

It costs 1 euro per person and runs pretty regularly during the day. You can also get a train to Basel or anywhere else from Saint Louis.

And you can also go to the Swiss side of the airport and catch the Swiss shuttle/bus to the Basel train station where you can buy train tickets to anywhere or use the Basel tram system.

The train lines in Alsace for the most part run on the plains between the Vosges mountains and the Rhine river nowhere near the Alsace wine region.

So your options are Basel, Mulhouse, Rouffach and Colmar for that particular train line.

Rouffach is the only wine road village on that train line.

Basel, Mulhouse and Colmar are definitely worth checking out of course!

There are other train lines available that will take you to other interesting Alsatian villages from Mulhouse, Colmar, Selestat or Strasbourg.

Enjoy your trip!
Suzele
