The Family of Jacob Setter

by Kevin Hillman
(US)

My 4x Great grand father emigrated to America in 1847 (departed to the US at Havre)from Zilling, Meurthe, France.

The family of 5 consisted of Jacob (father, age 40), Cathe (mother, age 36), Nicholas (age 8), Peter (age 6) and baby George. Any help would be appreciated.

Under what circumstances would this family leave France? Were they part of the Jewish community? What was happening in Alsace in late 1846/early 1847?

Lorraine France not Alsace France
by: Suzele

Hi Kevin,

The good or bad news is that your family isn't from Alsace. They are from Lorraine.
Moselle to be specific.

Technically it's not extremely far from the Alsace border but from a point of view of finding information, you need to look there not in Alsace.

The other good news is that you should be able to find information about Jacob because you know where he was born.

And chances are that you will be able to find more information if all of the family was in that area.

As for Jewish heritage, I'm guessing that you already know that they were or not if you have Jewish heritage.

Not all of their given names are Old Testament so I'm going to say no, but as with all genealogy, it's just an educated guess.

As for what was going on in Moselle, Lorraine, France at the time?

I can't say exactly as I study Alsace primarily.

Although many people emigrated to the US from Europe in the 1800s.

I'm not aware of any major catastrophes going on in Alsace at this time.

Good luck with your research!
Suzele
