If you don't speak French or German, communication can be a problem.
But thankfully, most of the touristy villages have Tourism Offices, and without fail, someone there can speak English.
They are most helpful and they have maps of Alsace (some are free, and some cost a few Euros).
The Michelin map of Alsace is great. We made it a habit of finding the Tourism Office and going there first thing every time we went to a new location.
You have to have a local map to be able to find your way around.
So if you can find the Tourism Office, you are in good shape.
