When Should You Go to the Wine Route in Alsace
by: Suzele

Hi Jill,

That is not an easy question to answer, because there are advantages and disadvantages to every time of year.

The cheapest time of year to visit Alsace is the winter (excluding December). But it's colder and some businesses and sites are closed. So it depends on where you want to go. There's plenty to do. Just bring your coat with you : )

The most expensive times of year (and the most crowded too) are summer and December. The prices rise dramatically as well as the number of people visiting the region.

You can find yourself fighting through masses of people. Restaurants are often full. In the summer the weather can get really hot and there is often no air conditioning in small hotels.

But almost everything is open and has longer hours (in the summer). Everything is green. Flowers are everywhere. There are lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.

The spring and fall also have advantages and disadvantages. First off, the weather is harder to predict. Could be cold or warm. It might rain a lot or just a little.

The prices are not particularly cheaper at this time of year, but not as bad as the summer. Many sites are open but perhaps not all day every day.

The scenery is usually as nice as the summer (although it depends on how the weather has been). Lots of flowers and greenery most of the time.

I generally do tours throughout the year. Less in the winter, but quite regularly every other time of the year.

You'll find information like this and more in my book on Strasbourg and northern Alsace...

Hope it helps : )
